Helen Whetstone
(April 27, 1922 – October 9, 2018)
Helen Whetstone (née Ormiston) passed away quietly at 96 years on October 9, 2018.
Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Helen joined the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force during World War II, primarily working as a driver. During this time, she met her husband Gordon Edward Whetstone who was a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force. The couple married on August 26, 1944 and Helen came to Canada as a War Bride the following March, accompanied by her husband. They settled in Edmonton were she and Gordon raised their family and enjoyed a great circle of friends. In her later years, Helen enjoyed living in the Devonshire community where she was active leading sing-alongs and established the Veterans Memorial Day event.
Helen is lovingly remembered by her children, Doug (Melanie), Jackie (Ken), Barbara, Terri (Allan), granddaughters Lauren (Noah), Kate (Nick), Ann (Kjell), Desiree, Anna, Madison, and five great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her loving husband Gordon, her son-in-law Rod (Moore), and granddaughter, Vanessa (Constable).
A celebration of Helen’s life will be held later where a wee dram will be shared honouring her with her favourite toast “up your kilt.”. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association.
