Using Pinterest to Communicate Your Vision to Your Web Designer

Image of Pinterest on iPadI’ve mentioned before that Pinterest is a great place to get inspiration as a designer but it’s uses go far beyond organizing those pairs of  cowboy boots you’re lusting after. (You can take the girl out of Alberta but you can’t take Alberta out of the girl.) When you’re starting to think about your new website or your site’s redesign, Pinterest can be a great place to collect those ideas. Whether it’s an actual site that you’re drooling over or a few colour palettes and icons, pinning them to a Pinterest board can actually make your first meeting with your designer easier.

Here are a few great reasons to collect all of your design musings on a Pinterest board:

  1. That things that are most important to you will stand out. By putting all of your inspiration in one place, you’ll rapidly start seeing what design elements are most important to you, just by the sheer number of times those elements are repeated. For example, do all of the sites you pin have soft, feminine elements to them? That’s probably a good indicator that a beautiful piece of calligraphy or a nice water colour header are in the cards for your new site.
  2. It will help you communicate with your designer with a lot more clarity. I love a client who already has a few examples of work they like. In fact, I often ask my new clients to send me three websites they love, just so that I can get a sense of what intrigues them and what their style is. If you already have a well curated Pinterest board to show your designer, not only will you be ahead of the game, you may also just be my new best friend.
  3. It’s a great, easy place to start. Wrapping your head around a project as big as your website can be daunting. As with most big projects it’s good to start small, and creating a website Pinterest board is an awesome first step. It’s something small that you can do RIGHT NOW to get the ball rolling on your project, whether you’ve hired a designer yet or not and, I guarantee it will help clarify your website’s message and will help build up the inertia you need to start and follow through with your new site. And, it’s fun too!
